Dead Sea

The Great Rift Valley extends over 6,500 kms from Jordan to the lakes in Eastern Africa, but here at the Dead Sea it is at its lowest point some 400m below sea level. It is the lowest place on the face of the earth. The Dead Sea has no exit and it waters are supplied by the River Jordan flowing into its northern end. Seven billion kilograms of water evaporate from the sea each day leaving a body of water which is made quite dense as a result of the minerals being in high concentration.

Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium are “farmed” at the southern end of the sea along with Dead Sea Mud; rich in these, and other, minerals. This mud is said to have beauty enhancing properties; however having seen the sight of some tourists coming up from the sea covered from head to foot in this mud, it is probably safer to reserve judgement. Dead Sea products are readily available and some people swear by them.
