Jaffa Gate

One of the major gates into the Old City, this gate – as its name suggests – faces the road to Jaffa in the north of the country. It was at this point in the wall of the city that a gaping hole was made for Kaiser Wilhelm II to enter the city in triumph in 1898. Some 20 years later General Allenby marked the end of Turkish rule entering the city here by dismounting and walking through on foot.

There is a wonderful walk around the city walls of Jerusalem which can begin from here, tickets being purchased from the Tourist Office just inside the gate.
