Life for many people in the region is hard and made more so by the continuing political uncertainty and precarious economic state of the Holy Land. Continuing security considerations means that the normal opportunities of life which we take for granted – freedom of movement, journey to work, land ownership, access to farmland – can prove very difficult. As a consequence many families and individuals suffer great hardship. Levels of unemployment are considerably higher than in the United Kingdom and many people are reliant on the Church to provide assistance. Self-help projects in business and micro-finance are a way in which the Church tries to help. Housing projects and renovations, water storage, job creation schemes and child support services are also provided by the Church.
